Matt O'Grady kicks off the 2016 PBA WSOB VIII with a victory in the PBA Regional Challenge

Regional G-Force™ staffer Matt O’Grady, of Matawan, NJ, kicked off the 2016 PBA World Series of Bowling in grand fashion by winning the PBA Regional Challenge. The event featured 7 players in 3 divisions (PBA, Women's and PBA50) who earned their spots through point qualification in the different PBA Regional programs. Matt, representing the East region, defeated fellow G-Force™ staff member Dick Allen 225-217 for the crown. It was Dick's first loss of the 9 game event, but came at a pivotal moment.

“I know it doesn’t count as a title, but it sure feels like one to me,” O’Grady said. “Being here on bowling’s biggest stage, live on Xtra Frame, against a stellar field of players who all have a lot more experience than I do feels pretty good. Maybe, at age 30, I’m just hitting my prime a little late.”

On the women's side, G-Force™ member and South representative Ashly Galante, of Palm Harbor, Fl, posted a 7-1 match play record for the high qualifier position, but came up just short, finishing 2nd after a 267-188 loss to eventual winner and West region representative Missy Parkin. Ashly is a great competitor and star player on the PWBA Tour. In the PBA50 Senior division, Walter Ray Williams Jr. collected even more hardware in his illustrious career, defeating Ron Mohr 192-187 in the title match.

Other G-Force™ qualifiers in the PBA Regional Division were Tom Hess (3rd) and Eugene McCune (6th). Bob Learn Jr. (3rd) and Parker Bohn III (5th) competed in the PBA50 Senior Division, while Summer Jasmin (7th) took on the PBA Women's Division. In total, our G-Force™ staff comprised for 8 of the 21 qualifiers.

Led by Tommy Jones, our G-Force™ Staff delivered a 1-2-3 sweep in the PBA Xtra Frame Series Points Bonus

After finishing second in the PBA Maine Shootout in April to kick off the PBA Xtra Frame Tour’s winner-take-all points chase, Tommy Jones (G-Force™ Staff) of Simpsonville, S.C., never led until it mattered – at the very end.

Jones, needing a big finish to overtake Xtra Frame Series points leader E.J. Tackett (G-Force™ Staff), finished match play in Sunday’s Xtra Frame South Point Las Vegas Open with games of 300, 278 and 290 to qualify third for the stepladder finals. He then lost to Anthony Simonson, 248-191, but his fourth-place finish was good for 17 Xtra Frame Tour points and that gave him a total of 89 points for the year, enough to top Tackett’s 84 and Ryan Ciminelli’s (G-Force™ Staff) 83. The win earned him a $10,000 bonus.

For the record, Jones finished second in Maine (19 points), won the Greater Jonesboro Open (25 points), finished 19th in Lubbock, Texas (2 points); 11th in Middletown, Del. (10 points), and fifth in Aurora, Ill. (16 points) before the finale in Las Vegas. The seven-tournament Xtra Frame Tour awarded 25 points to each tournament winner, 19 points for second place, 18 for third, etc., declining by one point each place through 20 places, resulting in a close, competitive points race all the way to the end.

(Edit: All three staff members won titles during the Xtra Frame Bonus Events. Jones won the Downums Waste Services PBA Jonesboro Open, while Tackett won the PBA Xtra Frame Storm Open. Ciminelli was a two-time XF winner, being victorious in the PBA Maine Shootout prior to signing with Genesis®, then again after becoming a G-Force™ staff member in the PBA Xtra Frame Parkside Lanes Open.)
